Handwriting on an E.W. Edwards-built " late 1920's "Prosperity" rod built for, rather than by, Paul Young. On the rod shaft, the writing is all on one flat, but here has been split in two to magnify detail.

PHY rods of the late 1940's and earlier are often marked an ink stamp of the model name, rather than a handwritten identification. This is the stamp for a PHY Special built by Paul H. Young.
I have seen this identification sticker only once, on a 9'6", 3-piece rod. The handwriting below is much later and documents refinishing of the rod by Bob Summers.
The caps on cap-and-ring and screwlock reel seats are usually (but not always) marked with what I call the "Detroit" stamp. Inset within a rectangle are two lines of text: PAUL H. YOUNG CO. / DETROIT - MICH. The cap may have no other decoration (left) or may have diagonal, coin-edge knurling (right). The "Detroit" stamp continued to be used even after the PHY Company moved to Traverse City, Michigan.
